Kosciusko County Jail, Indiana, Inmate Locator, Sheriff’s Office
The Kosciusko County Jail accommodates both the road prison and the main jail, housing all felons arrested in Kosciusko County. The jail is dedicated to ensuring public safety by offering custody and control of inmates. Nevertheless, the jail officials treat inmates with respect and fairness while maintaining a secure, humane, and safe environment for them, the staff, and the community.
Moreover, the Kosciusko County Jail offers programs that encourage positive attitudes and behavior change to help and support those incarcerated as they blend into the community. Besides offering work release security, the jail also provides training, central support services, transportation, booking, contract, and health services.
Searching for an Inmate
For you to fully support an incarcerated individual, you’ll first have to identify the facility they are in, and hence, doing an inmate search would be the right first step.
Once you find them, you’ll want to put down the relevant information such as the facility address, facility code, booking date, and booking number. The reason is, you’ll need the information anytime you wish to visit, send mail, or even money to the inmate.
Supporting an Inmate
Regardless of whether an offender is incarcerated for a major or minor offense, it would be best if they were in contact with positive relatives and friends. After all, it could be vital for their rehabilitation. Writing letters, helping them acquire things from the jail commissary, visiting them, and being a person they can feel comfortable calling are excellent ways to support them.
However, it’s important to note that all prisons and jails have distinct procedures and rules for maintaining contact. Here’s how to stay in contact with an incarcerated individual at Kosciusko County Jail.
Mail: If you wish to send mail to a felon, you must use their address from the inmate search. Double-check to ensure you don’t leave out any information. Below is an example:
Kosciusko County Jail
Inmate full name/number
221 West Main Street,
Warsaw, IN, 46580
Also, you must include a return address on the mail, failure to which will mean the mail not reaching the intended inmate. Include your full name along with your address.
Calls: Like with all correctional facilities, inmates in Kosciusko County Jail are only entitled to make outgoing calls. And this can happen in two ways:
- You can create a prepaid account through which you can receive calls directly to your cell phone.
- Deposit money in an inmate’s phone account to allow them to make calls to any number provided in the approved list.
All calls by inmates are limited to 30 minutes and can be shortened to 15 minutes during rush hours. Luckily enough, all housing units in Kosciusko County Jail feature telephones through which those incarcerated make their calls.
Visiting Inmates: If you wish to visit an inmate in Kosciusko County Jail, you’ll have to schedule the visit online. Note that new users using the jail’s website will be required to register for an account to access such services.
Visitation days and times are as follows:
- Inmates whose last names start with A through M: Tuesday 1 pm – 4 pm / Saturday 5.30 pm – 8.30 pm
- Inmates whose last names start with N through Z: Tuesday 5.30 pm – 8.30 pm / Saturday 1 pm – 4 pm
Nonetheless, here are a few points to keep in mind before scheduling a visit:
- All visits are scheduled 24 hours prior
- Cell phones are confiscated during the visit
- No extra visitors will be allowed on the day of visitation
- Visits through video are allowed
You can also call the Kosciusko County Jail to schedule a visit through the facility’s phone contacts.
The Kosciusko County Jail Commissary
Those incarcerated in the Kosciusko County Jail are allowed to make purchases of the necessities they may need from the facility’s commissary. Some of the items sold in the commissary include:
- Shoes
- Clothes
- Hygiene products
- Paper, pens, envelopes, pencils, stamps
- Books
- Tablets (without internet)
Nonetheless, for an inmate to purchase such items, bail themselves out or make calls, they will need money deposited in their trust accounts. Hence, you might need to make the necessary arrangements for that.
After admission into the facility, all inmates are provided with a commissary account. You could either send money orders, checks, or cash to enable them to make purchases. Nevertheless, like most county jails, those incarcerated aren’t allowed to have cash. Therefore, you’ll be required to bring the cash directly to the facility. In the case of money orders and checks, sending them via postal address is allowed.
About the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana, is committed to delivering protection and safety to the residents of Kosciusko County. Besides assuring front-line law enforcement to the people, our department also ensures safe travel on our county and state highways, parks, and waterways.
Being one of the largest counties in the state of Indiana, our dedication, years of service, and expertise all add to our professionalism in serving the Kosciusko County residents with pride. We provide service on all county roads adding up to over 1186 miles and the 103 lakes in Indiana. And through that, we showcase the dynamic assortment of quality services and our commitment as far as law enforcement is concerned.
Our department’s premises are next to the Justice Building at 221 West Main Street in downtown Warsaw. Our offices operate with about 36 merit officers, 5 work release officers, 6 civilians, 2 court security officers, and 24 jail officers.
History
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department dates back to April 4, 1836, when Isaac Kirkendall was elected as the first Kosciusko County Sheriff. He served in office from 1836 to 1839 and had a long cabin acting as the office/jail. For what’s worth, it did satisfy its intended purpose at that time.
It was until 1871 that a new jail was constructed on the corner of Indiana and Main Street. It served for nearly a century until the 1980’s when the Justice Building was built. As of now, the old jail serves as the official premises of the Kosciusko County Historical Society.
In 1979, authorities drew and approved plans for a new Sheriff’s Department, Jail, and Court Complex. The project’s groundbreaking began on May 2, 1980, and the structure was completed on May 3, 1982. And the project turned out successful with the new developments seeing new technology integrated into the facility. The facility had an 88-bed capacity with black and white video surveillance cameras in 6 hold cells and 8 cell blocks. However, after a decade or probably more, the capacity was no longer enough; it was normal to have roughly 130 inmates on a random day.
Overcrowding was a serious issue, and hence an expansion was necessary. And in 2001, there were plans to expand the facility. Nevertheless, there still needed a long-term solution to the capacity and the complex’s state of condition. So, in 2003, the necessary arrangements saw a 294-bed capacity jail and a new Sheriff’s Department set up from the prevailing structure.
State-of-the-art electronics to help monitor the perimeter and inmates were acquired and installed. The renovation also allowed for roomy and large cell blocks and new cells with more improvements to the security being made.
